Diego paints from plein air — real time spent inside a landscape — building canvases that question how we see, and therefore relate to, the world around us. Original work and commissions, made in his Sooke studio.
Story
Born in Mexico City, Diego moved to Sooke, BC in 2019. His paintings work from direct experience of place — sessions on location in Antarctica, Iceland, and along the West Coast — turning into studio pieces that sit between the natural and the built.
He's presented solo exhibitions at Anahuacalli–Diego Rivera and the Cultural Centre of Contemporary Mexico, shown collectively across the US, Argentina, Canada, and Mexico, and took first prize in Mexico's Luis Nishizawa Landscape Painting Biennial (2017). He was a member of Mexico's National System of Creators (2020–2023). Since landing in Canada he's mounted a solo show (Behind Us, 2020) and picked up two awards at the Sooke Fine Arts Show.
